Leaving the car unlocked
Most thieves won’t ever notice
the roof you’ve taken off
the vehicle parked in the lot
on the side of the road
No they will just pass by
not knowing your keys are
sitting there right beside
your wallet that you left
without a clue
A homeless man may pass
and stay a night but
He’s no harm so he’s alright
He’ll leave your cash and
roll your windows up too
A kid who’s lost their way
Might climb up in your ride
as if it was their playground
They’ll leave dirt marks on
the seats from the beat up
shoes hanging off their feet
But they’ll never leave it
with a scratch or a bolt
hanging loose
The woman walking by might
look in your side mirror
She might look you in the eye
But she’ll keep on walking
as they always do
You can take the doors off
Leave the windows down
and the console unlocked
Because no one under you
Is going to steal what you’ve got
Now if you get to feeling down or sick
Don’t tell the rich man
because he might pick
You out of a crowd of all the ill
He’ll have you sign papers
So he can take your name
he’ll send it to the nearest bank
So he can take your car
and even your check
The rich man will look inside
to see what he can ravage
to see what he can find
sitting in an unlocked car
He’ll take your deed and
your insurance papers
He’ll break your windows
and scratch your paint
He’ll slice all your tires
if you leave a knife
in the pocket of the door
Whatever he can take
He’ll call you up and
ask for more
Your neighbor isn’t stealing
and neither is the man
from a different side of town
They’re just making a living
while the rich man gets around
So be careful if you leave
your car in a rich neighborhood
with the roof open
and the console unlocked
Someone might see that
You’re doing well and
want to stop you from
having just a little
of what they’ve got
